Rednecks: The New TV Trend

The world of entertainment has followed some odd trends over the years. I remember when reality TV was just starting out and it grew very popular. The first reality show that I can recall was Cops. Which is ironic because most “reality celebrities” end up in prison.

But in the last few years or so, we’ve seen an even more bizarre phenomenon taking place. Our homes are now filled with redneck stars that have somehow gained fame.

The wonderful world of reality TV has brought us gems such as Duck Dynasty, Moonshiners, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, and the newest addition, Buckwild.

I personally thought once we all got past Jersey Shore, it would be really difficult to replace their interesting and almost disturbing lifestyle. But once again, I was wrong.

We scraped the bottom of the barrel for these clowns and discovered that the barrel was deeper than we thought.

Now the world of reality TV has produced a new trend that has created conversations and clever status updates on Facebook and Twitter. A lot of them have been from yours truly. We have stumbled into the world of the redneck.

The first show that began to display this lifestyle was Duck Dynasty. I have no problem with this show and I know a lot of people who enjoy it. I think it’s hilarious that these guys started a business of making duck callers and ended up turning it into a million dollar empire.

But then, there are shows like Honey Boo Boo and Buckwild. And these people are just idiots.

First of all, Honey Boo Boo really bothers me. This girl has been raised in the world of beauty pageants where everything is fake and the girls are shallower that the kiddie pool in my front yard.

Ladies, the water is fine.

And what’s even worse about this show is that it is on The Learning Channel. You know where you are suppose to learn stuff? If Honey Boo Boo is on The Learning Channel that technically makes her a teacher. And technically, that makes us stupid.

Now, let’s talk about Buckwild. Sweet Lord.

First of all, if you are speaking the English language, and you need subtitles so the viewers can understand you, then there is a problem.

Second, why in the world was this show even made? We are glorifying people who do stupid things, get in fights, drink all the time, and have no decency. But guess what? I’m just as guilty because I watch every episode and I will continue because it makes me laugh. I’m part of the problem.

Somehow, MTV looked into my mind and the majority of people my age and found that we all have one thing in common; we love to watch stupid people do stupid things.

I’m not sure what’s so addicting about these programs. Maybe after I see a few episodes, it helps me to feel better about myself and my life. Sure I got a flat tire, my dog peed on the carpet and I got stuck in traffic, but at least no one recorded me eating boogers or drinking so much beer that I ran around the town in my underwear. So it’s still a good day.

5 Reasons Why the Show “16 and Pregnant” Is a Horrible Influence

If you have never seen the show “16 and Pregnant,” then count yourself lucky. I, on the other hand, have seen multiple episodes and have recently thought about how this show can influence young adults and teenagers. The conclusions that I came to were pretty horrifying for me.

1.It makes getting pregnant seem cool-That’s right. Despite the information about safe sex and how to prevent pregnancy, this show can have a horrible influence that it’s okay to get pregnant at a young age. Think about it. We live in a culture that promotes sex. From clothing to cars, we are constantly bombarded with sexual imagery.

These girls are being given a television show once they get pregnant. In our culture, that is seen as some type of reward. As we all know, people on reality television become famous, admired, and even loved by our culture.

Of course there is an exception to every rule.

So if young people believe they can make it in reality television by getting pregnant, then what’s to stop them? Everybody wants to be a celebrity, so if getting pregnant is the way to go, some girls will go down that path. And that is scary.

2. It encourages girls to be in horrible relationships– If you ever watch the show, you’ll quickly learn that the boyfriends are usually not great catches. Most of them are unemployed, video game playing, no ambition teenagers. All of these attributes are fine if you are a teenager, but once you step into the role of being a father and a husband, you need to step it up.

Also, the girls aren’t much better. Some of the guys get treated like garbage on the show. And what’s even worse is the fact that these young kids get married out of guilt-not out of love.

This is real love…

So now all of these young kids are ending up in abusive relationships that they didn’t even want to be in. Man, babies sure make things complicated.

Yeah baby, I’m talking to you!!!

3. It airs on a channel that sends mixed signals– Mtv is one of the last places I would recommend looking when it comes to morals. They aren’t exactly good “role models.” Might I suggest “South Park?”

Much better.

But seriously, every other show on Mtv is about how awesome hooking up is. From the “Real World” to “Jersey Shore.” Mtv has the power of influence over young people and can therefore teach them some horrible things.

This guy is your children’s Sex Ed teacher.

I understand that Mtv is trying to do its part and teach young people about safe sex. But come on, when you make sex and partying look so great, how can you expect to have a positive influence? “Forget about STDs and all that garbage, just don’t get pregnant,” said the Situation.

4. The poor kids could be scarred for life– Think about it. Don’t you hate it when your parents tell embarrassing stories about you, or show embarrassing pictures of you as a baby? Now take that shame and multiply it by a million. These poor babies on the show have to grow up in front of millions of viewers. Once these kids are old enough to understand what’s going on, how are the parents going to explain that all of these embarrassing moments have been put on display?

“Why did you do this to me, mommy?”

Look at young Hollywood. Most of them are on drugs, drinking all the time, or going crazy!  If these kids stay on television, there is no telling how they will grow up. I hope for the best for them. The parents are basically making money off of allowing their kids to be filmed, without the children’s permission. There should be some type of child labor law against that or something.

“I’m suing you, mom!”

5. It spawns other shows about pregnancy-Now there are shows all over the place about teen pregnancy! And my personal favorite is….

If you listen closely, you can hear my man card being taken away.

This show is ridiculous…and addicting. I’ll admit that I have sat down and watched a few episodes. Mostly to sit and laugh about it later. The acting is terrible and the information is stupid. After every soap opera-like episode, where they glorify getting pregnant and having a child at 16, they try to make it better by showing this.

I’m not exaggerating when I say this show is messed up. Everyone is banging everyone, and all these young girls are having kids. Why are there so many shows glorifying this? There needs to be a show about about a nice girl who studies hard and gets into college and makes a difference. But no one would watch that would they?

Man, I wish I could go back in time to where shows didn’t glorify pregnancy and instead it glorified being a normal kid.

Those were the days.
